The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that two states run by Republicans have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent President Joe Biden's administration from urging social media companies to remove false information about COVID-19, the 2020 election and other subjects. The Globe's Adrian Morrow writes that the court gave the case a cold reception during oral arguments on Monday. Most justices questioned whether government officials merely requesting information removal constituted coercion. In the case of Murthy v. Missouri, the states of Missouri and Louisiana, along with five individuals who use social media, are accusing the federal government of violating their constitutional freedom of speech rights. Officials from the White House and other government agencies allegedly pressured Meta's Facebook, Twitter (now known as X), YouTube and Alphabet's Google to remove posts, ban accounts, or make it difficult for users to access content that promoted conspiracy theories related to the pandemic, vaccines and the election. Benjamin Aguinaga, a lawyer for Louisiana, told the Supreme Court: "Pressuring platforms in backrooms, shielded from public view, is not using a bully pulpit. That's just being a bully."
