The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Feb. 6, edition that cybertip.ca director Stephen Sauer says in regard to on-line child sexual abuse and exploitation that he has "seen some pretty dark stuff in terms of the violence that occurs toward kids." The Post's Sharon Kirkey writes that reports of on-line sexual violence like sextortion, a form of blackmail where the perpetrator coerces a young person into sending sexual images or video, and then threatens to distribute those images unless they send them money or more sexual images, has been rising sharply. In recent days alone, American lawmakers have accused Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and four other big tech bosses of having "blood on your hands." The allegations have surfaced that up to 100,000 children a day using Facebook and Instagram in 2021 were exposed to on-line sexual harassment, including pictures of adult genitalia. Researchers have warned that a network of West African cybercriminals known as the Yahoo Boys are "bombing" youth across the U.S., Canada and Australia with fake accounts "to coerce victims into compromising situations." The volume of reports involving on-line sexual luring has increased dramatically, from 220 in 2018, to 2,013 in 2022.
