The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that social media has become a powerful vector for misinformation, an effective tool for cyberbullying and for harming teenagers' mental health. A Globe editorial says social media companies allegedly knew about these downsides and were unable, or chose not to, deal with them. The Globe says artificial intelligence is the mother's little helper for bad actors to create factories of false stories and fake people, duping unwitting victims over text, voice or video. Beyond the danger to individuals, there is also the big-picture threat to economic prosperity. Because of lax antitrust enforcement over the past 30 years, we now have tech behemoths that can stare down large countries. Google and Amazon have amassed monopolies through acquisitions and predatory practices. Meta has retained its top position in social media by buying emerging rivals, such as Instagram. The Globe says regulators should be pro-active in making sure there is robust competition for the tools. Competition-killing acquisitions and contracts that stifle access should be examined carefully and blocked if needed. Policy makers should act now to create the future we want and head off an AI dark side.
