The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Nov. 2, edition that the world's first AI Safety Summit began with dire warnings about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. The Globe's Paul Waldie writes that there was little consensus about what risks to prioritize or what action to take. Tech billionaire Elon Musk called AI "one of the biggest threats to humanity." He said: "For the first time we have a situation where there's something that is going to be far smarter than the smartest human. So, it's not clear to me we can actually control such a thing." Other delegates played down the future fears and argued that AI presents far more immediate problems in terms of disinformation, privacy issues and job losses. DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman said: "There is a little bit of an obsession to artificial intelligence and existential risks and that is causing people to be overanxious. Smaller models are getting increasingly powerful and that's a real conundrum." Mr. Suleyman said the summit's closed-doors meetings revealed many disagreements among delegates. One of the main debates is how to regulate open source AI models, where the original coding has been made public.
