The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Nov. 1, edition that on Wednesday, representatives from government, industry and academia will gather at Britain's Bletchley Park, the home of the Second World War code breakers, for the world's first AI Safety Summit, where they will discuss the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence, and what steps can be taken to address the challenges. The Globe's Paul Waldie writes that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said last week: "There is no question that AI can and will transform the world for the better. But we cannot harness its benefits without also tackling the risks." Mr. Sunak is eager to use the summit to showcase the country's openness toward investment in the technology. He has already announced the establishment of an AI safety institute and he wants to create an expert monitoring group similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC. Few world leaders are expected to show up at the summit. Canada will be represented by Innovation, Science and Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne. The most high-profile participant will be tech billionaire Elon Musk, who will hold a question-and-answer session with Mr. Sunak on X.
