The National Post reports in its Saturday, Aug. 26, edition that Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge is hopeful the government will resolve its standoff with Meta, which has blocked news content on Facebook and Instagram in Canada. The Post's Anja Karadeglija writes that Meta's Rachel Curran said in a statement: "We met with the minister at her request and will continue to keep the government informed as we end news availability. As we've previously stated, regulations cannot address the fundamental challenges with the legislation, and we relayed this to the minister today." The Online News Act forces Meta and Google to reach revenue-sharing deals with news publishers for news stories that are shared via their platforms. Google has also said it plans to pull news from search and other products, but the company has been more willing to talk with the government in an attempt to find a compromise. The government has indicated its draft regulations, which still have not been released, will address some of Google's concerns. Ms. St-Onge said she was hopeful the Liberal government will come to a resolution with both companies. "My discussions with both platforms have been very positive and constructive," she said.
