The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Aug. 22, edition that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took aim at Facebook parent Meta on Monday, saying the company's move to remove news from its website is "putting corporate profits ahead of people's safety." The Post's Ryan Tumilty writes that the Liberal government and Meta have been at odds since the government passed C-18, legislation that requires companies such as Facebook and Alphabet's Google to strike revenue-sharing deals with news publishers. Postmedia, the owner of the National Post, supports the legislation. Meta has responded to the legislation by pulling news stories from both Facebook and Instagram, preventing users from sharing links to websites. That has continued during the wildfires in B.C., and prevented anyone in Canada from sharing news about the fires. Mr. Trudeau said the company's decision to remove news content is unfathomable.
