The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that with devastating wildfires in Yellowknife and Kelowna, Meta should reverse its "unacceptable" and "reckless" decision to block news content on its platforms in Canada, Liberal government ministers said. The Post's Anja Karadeglija writes that Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez said, "I'm asking them to go back on their decision and allow people to have access to news and information in general." Canadians and Canadian news outlets cannot post or share news content on Facebook or Instagram. Mr. Rodriguez called Meta's decision "unacceptable." Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said the government is "deeply disappointed that Facebook has decided to be irresponsible, unreasonable, and continues to block news." She followed that up with a social media post stating Meta's "reckless choice to block news before the Act is in force is hurting access to vital information. ... We are calling on them to reinstate news sharing today for the safety of Canadians facing this emergency." Meta on Friday pointed to its "safety check" feature, which allows people to mark themselves as safe in an emergency. Meta activated the feature in Yellowknife Thursday.
