The National Post reports in its Thursday, Aug. 17, edition that in 2020, Christopher Curtis left a reporting job at the Montreal Gazette to strike out on his own, launching an investigative journalism outlet focusing on stories other media were not covering. The Post's Anja Karadeglija writes that three years later, The Rover is reporting on issues like Montreal's homeless encampments and the impact of wildfires on Cree territory. It is a business that supports the Curtis family -- which means Meta's blocking of news on its platforms in Canada could have very personal consequences. Mr. Curtis says: "The Rover pays our rent. The Rover pays for daycare, The Rover pays for our life." He adds, "I can't let this fail." Two weeks ago, Meta began blocking news on Facebook and Instagram in response to the Liberal government's Online News Act, which would force it to share revenues with news outlets (National Post's publisher Postmedia supports the bill). Some observers put the blame on the Liberal government for mishandling the legislation, while others place it squarely on Meta. No matter whose fault, the situation means news outlets and readers cannot view or share news on Facebook.
