The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that Bob Dhillon is founder and chief executive officer of Mainstreet Equity, a company with about 16,000 apartment buildings in 19 cities across Western Canada. The Post's guest columnist Donna Kennedy-Glans writes that there is no denying she is intrigued by Mr. Dhillon's classic rags-to-riches immigrant story. How do you land in northeast Calgary as a 12-year-old boy, having escaped from civil unrest in the West African country of Liberia at about the same time Idi Amin is expelling Sikhs from Uganda, and then have the audacity at age 19 to borrow money (at 18-per-cent interest) to buy, renovate and resell two distressed houses during Calgary's 1985 downturn and go on to build, property-by-property, the first Sikh-owned company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange? In late 2021, Mr. Dhillon was awarded an Order of Canada, recognized, alongside others, as someone who "desires a better country." To Ms. Kennedy-Glans's thinking Mr. Dhillon is a guy with unique insight into how Canadians can use immigration policy to make our country better. Mr. Dhillon believes we are not fully realizing the benefit of the first-generation talent coming through the immigration door.
