The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that the expanded Trans Mountain pipeline, which began operations in May, 2024, has provided Canadian oil producers with excess export capacity. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that the study from the Canada Energy Regulator indicates that since then, western pipeline capacity has averaged about 400,000 barrels a day more than the exported volume, peaking at 574,000 barrels a day in June. Trans Mountain nearly tripled the capacity of Canada's sole oil pipeline system running from Alberta to the Pacific Coast to 890,000 barrels a day, letting producers expand production after years of constraints that forced them to sell oil at steep discounts to United States prices. Even with the pipeline surplus, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been pushing for a new conduit to be built from the oil sands to the coast in British Columbia, further reducing the industry's dependence on U.S. buyers. Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed a willingness to consider new pipelines amid the country's trade war with the U.S. and has tapped former Trans Mountain chief executive officer Dawn Farrell to lead the government's effort to fast-track large new infrastructure projects.
