The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 28, edition that Ottawa is aiming to develop Canadian defence "champions" to revitalize the domestic industry by boosting investment and supply chains. The Globe's Pippa Norman writes that Prime Minister Mark Carney has updated the Liberal government's Defence Industrial Strategy announced in mid-February. The PM said: "We are focused first on building in Canada, directing procurement to Canadian firms where we have those sovereign capabilities. Where we can't build alone, we're partnering with like-minded allies, attracting investment, transferring [intellectual property] and integrating supply chains, so more public dollars will go back to Canada." The new Strategic Partnership Framework is a tool Mr. Carney's government plans to use to enhance Canada's domestic supply chain by partnering with select firms, called "champions." The timeline for announcing these champions is still unclear. Potential candidates for the program could include aviation training giant CAE and aerospace company MDA Space. However, United States or foreign-owned subsidiaries won't be ruled out, said Industry Minister Melanie Joly.
