The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Wednesday he plans to negotiate interim trade deals with Canada and Mexico by the end of the year, while changes to trade rules will likely extend into next year. The Globe's Mark Rendell and Laura Stone write that Mr. Greer aims to present options to President Donald Trump, Mexican President Sheinbaum and Prime Minister Carney before the end of 2026. "I would love to have, between now and the end of the year, at least some arrangements: one with Canada, one with Mexico," he said, without specifying what would be included in these deals. Negotiations about changing core parts of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement -- including rules of origin and labour regulations -- could "take a little more time" and include further discussions "with Congress in the following year," he said. This is the first time U.S. officials have spelled out a timeline for a potential resolution to the trade dispute. Mr. Greer spoke two days after the Trump administration threatened tariffs on $20-billion (U.S.) of Canadian exports, aimed at pressuring Ottawa to negotiate. Diplomatic efforts show little public sign of progress.
