Globe says Magna, rivals see bridge deal get tweaked

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, July 18, edition that a 15-year deal between Canada and the U.S. regarding the Gordie Howe International Bridge will have Ottawa sending Washington half of the toll revenues minus operating costs. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that Canada, which funded the $6.4-billion bridge entirely, will not include debt repayment in these payments. This contradicts Prime Minister Mark Carney's statements about the financial terms of the agreement. "We get the revenues. Then the servicing of the costs of the bridge and paying the debt of the bridge, and then what's left over, there's a split of that for 15 years," Mr. Carney told CTV last Sunday, adding later: "There's not going to be a lot of net to split." A source confirmed that the 2012 deal between Canada and Michigan, which allows Ottawa to keep all tolls until bridge costs are recouped, remains the same. They clarified that net revenues refer to all bridge tolls minus operating costs, with no deductions for debt servicing. The source described the new U.S. side deal as a parallel agreement to the 2012 Canada-Michigan agreement, requiring half of the bridge's net revenues to be paid into a U.S.-run economic development fund.
