The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the Canadian government welcomed the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that struck down the legal basis for some tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on Canada and other countries. A triple bylined item led by Steven Chase write that it does not, however, affect tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and autos. The decision pertains to duties imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, including "fentanyl tariffs" on Canada, Mexico and China, as well as "reciprocal" tariffs on other nations. Mr. Trump announced a new 10-per-cent global tariff following the Supreme Court's decision, using Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows tariffs of up to 15 per cent for 150 days. Most goods from Canada will still enter the U.S. tariff-free. The tariffs will expire unless Congress extends them. Mr. Trump plans to increase sectoral tariffs under Section 232 of the U.S. Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The U.S. Commerce Department is eyeing several industries, including aircraft, critical minerals and pharmaceuticals. Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's federal minister for North American trade, said that Friday's decision strengthens Canada's arguments against the levies.
