The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the federal government will take steps to ensure that imported Chinese electrical vehicles cannot be used to spy on Canadians, a parliamentary committee heard Thursday. The Globe's Robert Fife writes that during a House affairs committee meeting, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said that Ottawa will ensure Chinese EVs cannot transmit information back to China. Bloc Quebecois MP Christine Normandin had earlier expressed concerns that Chinese EVs could act as "little spies on the road," potentially recording conversations and tracking locations. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who criticized the deal, has warned that China would use the vehicles to spy on Canadians. "All vehicles coming into Canada will have safeguards in place where our information will be protected," Mr. Anandasangaree assured MPs who are studying foreign interference. The minister did not respond to questions on whether he thought China was the largest national-security threat to Canada. However, Dan Rogers, director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, did not duck the question. He told MPs that China, India and Russia are the main actors in pursuing foreign interference in Canada.
