The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Dec. 9, edition that U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra says he does not believe the United States wants to "terminate" its trilateral trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. The Post's Stefanie Taylor writes that on Monday, Mr. Hoekstra advised Canadians to prepare for various possibilities as the three countries prepare for their first joint review of the agreement signed during President Donald Trump's first term. "Canadians should be prepared for what they had signed up for six years ago, so should Americans," the ambassador said. The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement is set for its first review next year, with consultations already under way. Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Mr. Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum last week during a FIFA World Cup event in Washington. They spoke for 45 minutes and agreed to continue collaborating on the agreement. The agreement, effective from 2020, expires in 2036 and includes a review before that date. Countries must decide if they want to extend it for another 16 years and submit formal recommendations. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that withdrawal remains a possible scenario.
