The National Post reports in its Friday, June 27, edition that as Canada sets its electric vehicle goals, Prime Minister Mark Carney's government faces pressure to revise its plan. The Post's Stephanie Taylor writes that starting next year, the Liberal government will mandate sales targets for car companies, requiring them to either meet targets for battery-powered or hybrid vehicles or face penalties. The targets include 20 per cent of new passenger vehicles sold being electric by 2026, increasing to 60 per cent by 2030, and reaching 100 per cent by 2035. With electric car sales dropping and Canada's auto sector stressed by a U.S. trade war and the abandonment of electrification goals under President Donald Trump, Mr. Carney's government must decide whether to continue or rethink a key climate policy. Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association president Flavio Volpe says: "They're going to have to make adjustments. I think they know that, the industry knows that. It's really a negotiation on where those adjustments land." Mr. Volpe says he had spoken to "several ministers" about the issue this week. Ford Canada chief Bev Goodman has called for the mandate to be scrapped, pointing to falling customer interest.
