The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, June 6, edition that Canada's exports of automobiles to the U.S. dropped by 23 per cent in April as tariffs imposed by President Trump took effect. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that including parts, automotive shipments to the U.S. fell over 17 per cent in value, marking the largest sectoral decline in merchandise trade, according to Statistics Canada. Ontario automakers responded by cutting production, idling assembly lines and laying off workers. The Globe reported on Thursday that Prime Minister Mark Carney is in talks with President Donald Trump to negotiate a framework for a trade and security agreement. Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association (which represents Ford Motor, GM and Stellantis) president Brian Kingston said, "This data just underlines the importance of getting to an agreement with the Americans as quickly as possible, removing these tariffs and returning to North American automotive production." Mr. Trump claims his tariffs on most trading partners aim to boost U.S. manufacturing and address issues like fentanyl and illegal migration while balancing trade. However, his shifting tariff policies have caused chaos in the auto industry and other sectors.
