The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 22, edition that Rob Wildeboer, executive chairman of Martinrea International, is confident that U.S. tariffs on Canadian-made cars will be eliminated in the upcoming U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement negotiations. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that Mr. Wildeboer noted that these 25-per-cent tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump, are opposed by Detroit automakers due to their significant financial impact and potential for increased car prices, reduced production and job losses. Mr. Wildeboer mentioned he is frequently in contact with U.S. trade officials and has recently visited the White House. He noted that the U.S. is focused on three key trade issues with Canada: USMCA rules on auto parts' country-of-origin, Canada's supply-managed dairy and agriculture, and the digital services tax. He said: "These are the main points for the Americans. Addressing these could lead to the removal of auto tariffs." Canadian-made cars exported to the U.S. face 25-per-cent tariffs, reduced by U.S. content. Canada has similarly taxed U.S. vehicles but exempts domestic content and the importer's manufacturing footprint, while Canadian-made auto parts remain exempt from U.S. tariffs.
