The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Ottawa is consulting Canadians on how to address artificial intelligence agents that mislead with false information or act against their interests. The Globe's Marie Woolf writes that Ottawa has commenced a consultation to gather opinions on issues like labelling AI-generated content with watermarks. This follows the launch of the federal AI strategy by Minister Evan Solomon in June. The consultation seeks input from Canadians, including tech experts, on making AI use transparent and addressing its mistakes. It includes a survey running until Sept. 23 to guide the government's next steps. The survey is accompanied by a detailed discussion paper, published on Thursday, which sets out five areas for consideration. The discussion paper raises the question of who should be held responsible if an AI chatbot provides inaccurate information. AI agents can automatically buy weekly groceries but, "they can also malfunction, with potentially serious financial consequences," the discussion paper says. In one case study, a consumer gives an agent access to their credit card and shopping account. The AI orders 12 packages of a product, rather than a single package of 12.
