The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Canada's billionaire Weston clan, which controls Loblaw, is funding the launch of a national digital media start-up, according to four sources.
The Globe's triple bylined item reports that the on-line publication, being developed under the working title Be Giant, is preparing to launch this spring, according to the sources. It will be a non-profit, and not reliant on advertising or subscription revenue.
The Westons are investing millions in a multiyear project aimed at highlighting Canadian sovereignty and economic independence. Coverage will also emphasize Canadian entrepreneurs, researchers and innovations.
The new on-line publication will be run by former Maclean's magazine editor Alison Uncles, the sources said. The Weston-funded initiative joins several recent digital publications like The Logic, The Hub, The Peak and others from Overstory Media Group, aiming to compete with mainstream media.
In recent years, Wittington has shifted its investment strategy to focus more on innovations such as clean energy and early-stage technology companies.
It is understood that the new publication will operate at arm's length from the family, with editorial independence.
