The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that last week, President Trump suggested blocking the Gordie Howe Bridge, underscoring Canada's dependence on the U.S. for access to nutritious foods. The Globe's guest columnists Sarah Elton and Aden Fisher write that the United States controls about 82.9 per cent of all fruits and vegetables entering Canada. If food imports that come through the U.S. are slowed, tariffed or stopped, our food security is at risk. Grocery prices would rise and produce aisles would go empty. Canada has a strong fruit and vegetable industry and a greenhouse vegetable and mushroom sector that generated $3.4-billion in sales in 2024, with over half exported to the U.S. However, much of the field agriculture is currently inactive. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the need for Canada to achieve strategic autonomy, especially in food production. This means protecting our agricultural land from development. It is easy to mistake our supermarkets' well-stocked shelves for food security. But those bunches of broccoli and pints of strawberries hide the tenuous reality of our food system. We need to act now before those shelves are bare or a mercurial president throws a spanner in the works.
