Van Sun says Loblaw ponders how its nuts went missing

2024-04-23 07:24 ET - In the News

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Tuesday edition that it is a question B.C. Supreme Court is crunching: After 18 months, what happened to a truckload of President's Choice walnuts. The Sun's Susan Lazaruk writes that the logistics nightmare began about 18 months ago in British Columbia, and involved several companies and one defunct farmers' market spanning three different provinces. Some time after leaving a Regina storage facility around Dec. 1, 2022, Loblaw's nuts disappeared. "The current location of the shipment is unknown," according to the lawsuit filed by SPI Logistics, a company contracted by Loblaw for freight deliveries. The amount of loss is not included in the claim, but it likely is not peanuts: A semi-trailer can carry up to 20 tonnes; President's Choice walnuts cost $17.60 for 680 grams, so $500,000 retail is involved. The walnuts were en route to a place called Wild West Ranch in Clandeboye, Man., near Winnipeg, according to the lawsuit. That is just plain nuts, according to Bonnie Riddell, who owns and lives on a farm that used to have a farmers' market on site -- it closed in 2017 -- and that now has horses and cows and no need for walnuts. "This is a farm," she said. "We don't deal with walnuts."
