FP/CP say Loblaw, Walmart not signing code of conduct

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, April 23, edition that there has been a setback in the progress toward a Canadian grocery code of conduct as Loblaw and Walmart have refused to sign it. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post reports that the code aims to establish fair practices in negotiations between retailers and suppliers in the grocery industry. Some politicians and experts have refuted the retailers' claims, citing the successful implementation of similar codes in the United Kingdom and Australia which have resulted in a stabilizing effect on prices. While Canada's proposed code of conduct varies from its Australian and U.K. counterparts, there may be useful insights to gain from those frameworks as discussions regarding the Canadian code continue. Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada chief executive officer Michael Graydon says the code was not created with affordability in mind, but rather economic stability for suppliers and manufacturers. He, however, does believe it could help stabilize prices, saying countries with grocery codes have seen lower food inflation than others after those codes were implemented. "It shouldn't be the silver bullet of affordability."
