Globe/CP say Loblaw, Walmart wary of signing new code

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, April 22, edition that the progress toward establishing a code of conduct for Canadian grocery industry seems to have hit a roadblock as Loblaw and Walmart are reluctant to sign it. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that according to them, the proposed code may lead to increased prices. The code is expected to establish fair rules for negotiations between retailers and suppliers, with the aim of creating a level playing field in the grocery industry. Politicians and others have pushed back on claims the code could raise prices, saying similar codes in Britain and Australia had a stabilizing effect. Although Canada's proposed code of conduct differs from the Australian and British counterparts that influenced it, there may be lessons to draw from those frameworks as public discourse about the Canadian code comes to a head. Discussions about a grocery code here got started before food inflation began to surge. In recent months, however, rhetoric about the code and grocery prices have become increasingly intertwined as consumers felt the strain of higher bills. Some MPs said the code could help with food prices, claiming that is what happened in Australia and Britain.
