The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that the Competition Bureau has advanced its probe into whether a natural gas acquisition by Keyera will substantially lessen competition or raise barriers to entry in Canada's oil and gas industry. The Post's Barbara Shecter writes that the bureau secured a federal court order to collect information from Brookfield Infrastructure Partners' Inter Pipeline regarding Keyera's proposed acquisition of Plains All American Pipeline's Canadian natural gas liquids business. The court order requires Inter Pipeline to produce records and information relevant to the investigation. Inter Pipeline had acquired two liquids extraction plants near Fort McMurray in 2016, along with a fractionator in Alberta. Last June, Keyera announced a $5.15-billion deal to acquire all of Plains' Canadian NGL business along with select U.S. assets. It said the transaction would enhance domestic energy infrastructure and energy security, support economic resilience and establish a strong cross-Canada NGL corridor. Keyera says it is continuing to work toward closing the Plains transaction, which it aims to do next month. It says it remains "fully confident" the deal is in Canada's best interest.
