FP/CP say NuVista, rivals preparing for wildfire season

The Financial Post reports in its Monday, April 22, edition that Canadian energy producers are gearing up for another potential spring and summer of drought and wildfires in Western Canada. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post reports that many of the country's largest conventional oil and gas drillers operate in regions that were severely affected by hot, dry weather conditions last year. As early as the beginning of May, 2020, oil and gas companies in Alberta, as well as B.C., had to temporarily halt production due to the wildfires that were raging across key fossil fuel-producing regions. Most of the curtailments were done as a precautionary measure, and fortunately, no significant damage to energy-producing infrastructure occurred. Now, with this year's snow melting and spring-like conditions returning to Western Canada, oil and gas producers are ready for another potentially fiery year. Alberta's government declared an early start to wildfire season in late February, warning of unusually dry conditions and low snow cover. NuVista Energy chief executive officer Jonathan Wright says: "I think we're paid to worry about everything on behalf of the shareholders, and we do. But you know, we manage these things."
