Globe/wire say Goldman sees Shein make lacklustre debut

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Sept. 2, edition that shares in Shein ended flat on Tuesday during their Hong Kong debut, recovering from a sell-off fuelled by investor worries that setbacks and delays to a market listing have eroded its competitive advantages. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the stock dropped 10 per cent in early trading, but rebounded due to stabilization measures aimed at preventing sharp debut declines. Known globally for selling cheap tops and dresses, Shein has been humbled by tariff and duty changes in the United States and Europe that have contributed to a dramatic decline in its valuation. Founded in China in 2012 and headquartered in Singapore since 2021, Shein spent years attempting to list in New York and London, and touting its global credentials before re-embracing its Chinese roots to list in Hong Kong. That capped a four-year quest to go public and the associated intense scrutiny that ultimately led to Chinese authorities blocking those efforts. Morgan Stanley is a sponsor on Shein's initial public offering alongside Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan. Investors and analysts have worried about Shein's slowing growth, higher trade costs and tighter regulatory scrutiny.
