The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 14, edition that President Donald Trump has hijacked authority over everything, from Kennedy Center programming to White House renovations. The Globe's guest columnist Chris Gay writes that markets are about to find out whether Mr. Trump will do something similar, and unprecedented, via Kevin Warsh, whom the Senate confirmed on Wednesday as Federal Reserve chair. Mr. Trump's tendency to appoint loyalists conflicts with Mr. Warsh's aim to keep Fed policy free from political influence. Mr. Trump's preference for sycophants and his push for lower interest rates, combined with Mr. Warsh's eagerness for the role, could jeopardize Fed independence. He's already approached Mr. Warsh if he could trust him to support interest-rate cuts if chosen as Fed chair. Mr. Trump said the next chair should consult with the President on rates and mentioned that Mr. Warsh thinks they need to be lowered. Mr. Warsh told the Senate banking committee in April that Mr. Trump "never once asked me to commit to any particular interest-rate decision." He didn't sound very independent, though, when he refused to concede at the hearing that Mr. Trump lost the 2020 election.
