The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he has narrowed his list of potential Federal Reserve chair candidates to four, considering a successor to Jerome Powell. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Trump mentioned Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, and Kevin Warsh, a former Fed Board member, as strong candidates. Mr. Trump noted that two others are also being considered, but Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is not among them. Mr. Trump did not name his other two top candidates but used the opportunity to disparage Mr. Powell, whom he has dubbed "too late" in cutting interest rates. Mr. Trump plans to decide on the Fed chair "soon" and has been critical of Mr. Powell, whose term ends in May, 2026. Mr. Trump recently suggested that the Fed's board of governors take full control of the central bank, pressuring Mr. Powell to cut short-term interest rates and raising concerns about White House influence on the Fed. Mr. Trump has considered removing Mr. Powell before his term ends but has refrained from doing so after a Supreme Court ruling indicated he could only dismiss the Fed chair for cause, not policy disagreements.
