The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Aug. 4, edition that top White House economic advisers defended President Donald Trump's firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics head Erika McEntarfer amid concerns it could undermine confidence in U.S. economic data. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Mr. Trump had "real concerns" about the data, while National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett supported the call for new leadership. The controversy arose after a BLS report revealed 258,000 fewer jobs were created in May and June than previously reported. Mr. Trump accused Ms. McEntarfer of faking the jobs numbers without providing evidence. The BLS did not provide a reason for the revised data. Ms. McEntarfer, after her dismissal, expressed on Bluesky that serving as BLS commissioner was "the honor of her life" and praised the agency's civil servants. "I think what we need is a fresh set of eyes at the BLS, somebody who can clean this thing up," Mr. Hassett said on Fox News Sunday. Critics slammed Mr. Trump's move and called on Congress to investigate Ms. McEntarfer's removal, saying it would shake trust in a respected statistical agency.
