The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Aug. 2, edition that President Donald Trump removed the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Erika McEntarfer, after a report showed slower job growth in July and weaker hiring in May and June. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Trump alleged, without evidence, that the figures were manipulated for political reasons and called for her dismissal.
On Truth Social Mr. Trump said: "I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified." Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said Ms. McEntarfer is no longer leading the bureau, and William Wiatrowski, the deputy commissioner, is the acting director. Friday's jobs report revealed that only 73,000 jobs were added last month, with a revision showing 258,000 fewer jobs created in May and June. Ms. McEntarfer became the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labour Statistics in January, 2024. Commissioners serve four-year terms but can be dismissed, as they are the agency's only political appointee among many career civil servants.
Mr. Trump focused much of his ire on the revisions the agency made to previous hiring data.
