The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that President Donald Trump changed course on Wednesday in the face of growing turmoil. The Globe's Mark Rendell and Janice Dickson write that a group of influential figures on Wall Street, including Jamie Dimon from JPMorgan and Larry Fink from BlackRock, have recently cautioned that President Trump's aggressive and unpredictable trade policies could push the country into a recession and trigger inflation once again. Additionally, a small but increasing number of Republican members of Congress have voiced concerns about the tariffs, marking an unusual departure from the President's stance. Recently, the sell-off in stocks extended to U.S. Treasury bonds, a crucial market impacting others. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields surged over half a percentage point in two days as investors sought cash, raising borrowing costs across the economy. By Tuesday night, concerns about financial stability grew, and analysts wondered if U.S. Treasuries could still be considered a "safe haven." Capital Economics economist Paul Ashworth says Mr. Trump managed to withstand the stock market sell-off, but once the bond market weakened, he had no choice but to back down on his high tariffs.
