The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Jan. 17, edition that Wall Street's largest banks are supporting Donald Trump's plan to relax regulatory requirements that lenders consider obstacles, which positions the U.S. branches of Canadian institutions for potential gains, even as tariffs could be on the horizon. The Globe's Stefanie Marotta writes that this week, the six largest U.S. banks announced remarkable full-year earnings, with JPMorgan Chase & Co. becoming the first bank in U.S. history to exceed $50-billion (U.S.) in annual profit. However, chief executive officers are forecasting an even more profitable banking environment in the future, as the president-elect is expected to repeal certain regulations and dismiss calls for banks to maintain higher capital reserves as a safeguard against economic downturns. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said that "a more pro-growth agenda" and better collaboration from government are encouraging to businesses, boosting optimism about the economy. "We have consistently said that regulation should be designed to effectively balance promoting economic growth and maintaining a safe and sound banking system," Mr. Dimon said in a statement Wednesday.
