The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that with Republicans set to gain control of Congress, Donald Trump's economic plans may encounter little legislative pushback. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Trump aims to raise tariffs, extend corporate tax cuts, and provide tax breaks on tips and Social Security benefits. However, some fiscal conservatives worry these moves could increase the federal deficit and inflation. While stocks have rallied, a volatile bond market suggests investor concerns that an unrestrained Trump agenda could boost growth but also worsen the nation's debt. Yardeni Research's Ed Yardeni says, "If the Trump administration runs excessively stimulative fiscal policy, with lots of spending and tax cuts, leading to even wider deficits, I think then that may cause the bond vigilantes to push yields up to levels that create problems for the economy." Mr. Yardeni, a Wall Street analyst, coined "bond vigilantes" in the 1980s to describe how frustrated bondholders can influence politicians and central bankers. He believes they could pose a risk to the Trump agenda as well. Bond investors are concerned the Fed may lower rates further, risking inflation as the economy grows.
