The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Bank of America released its latest earnings Tuesday, beating analyst forecasts. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe says that although its profit in the third quarter fell more than 10 per cent from the same period last year, the decline was not as steep as expected, bolstered by a jump in trading revenue and investment-banking fees. Citigroup's earnings, also released Tuesday, featured a smaller-than-expected drop in profit but a hefty provision to cover future credit-card losses. The report showed that the bank was "moving in the right direction and that our strategy is gaining traction," chief executive officer Jane Fraser said in a statement. Goldman Sachs Group on Tuesday reported a monster jump in its third-quarter earnings, reaping $3-billion (U.S.) in profits -- far higher than what Wall Street analysts had expected, after CEO David Solomon publicly sounded the alarm, saying many aspects of the bank's business were stumbling in the quarter. Mr. Solomon warned that the bank's upcoming earnings might disappoint. Last week, JPMorgan reported bumper financial results but flagged a long list of potential problem spots ahead.
