The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Feb. 20, edition that in recent years, several big financial firms had pledged to fight climate change. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that now, however, Wall Street's biggest players, including JPMorgan, Pimco and State Street, have withdrawn from an international coalition of money managers called Climate Action 100+. This group aimed to urge large corporations to address climate issues. Wall Street's pullback from earlier environmental commitments has been on a slow and steady decline for several months, particularly as Republicans began attacking investment firms, accusing them of engaging in "woke capitalism." However, in the past few weeks, things have accelerated significantly. BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, reduced its involvement in the group. Bank of America also went back on its promise to stop financing new coal mines, coal-burning power plants and Arctic drilling projects. Republican politicians, sensing momentum, called on other firms to follow suit. The burst of activity reveals how challenging it is for companies to keep their promises of becoming more environmentally responsible.
