The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Tenstorrent Holdings has raised $1.5-billion in fresh capital as it steps up efforts to challenge Nvidia (all figures U.S.). The Globe's Sean Silcoff and Joe Castaldo write that the financing values Tenstorrent at $6.2-billion and comes after reports that Intel and Qualcomm both sought to acquire the company for over $5-billion earlier this year. Tenstorrent, founded in Toronto a decade ago, moved to the U.S. in 2023. Its Toronto office employs 200 of the company's 1,000 staff, with additional operations in Silicon Valley, Tokyo, Belgrade and Bangalore. The deal was led by two American private capital firms, Trace Capital and Innovation X. Samsung Securities and Hyundai Motor Group and LG Electronics, plus Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Export Development Canada and Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan. Montreal-based Real Ventures was an early investor and generated a windfall return when it sold out last year, making back the entirety of its $88-million third fund. Tenstorrent is building specialized hardware and software for processing a range of artificial intelligence workloads, promising to deliver faster speeds than the graphics processing units sold by Nvidia.
