The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that the Alberta government plans to provide financial support to oil sands companies to boost production and fill a proposed pipeline to the Pacific Coast. A Postmedia dispatch to the Post reports that the federal deal with Alberta and oil sands companies aims to meet climate goals while constructing a new oil export pipeline. A backgrounder on the deal lays out broad terms on which five oil sands companies agree to build a carbon capture and storage megaproject. The Pathways project has long been a key condition for Prime Minister Mark Carney in order to get his blessing for the proposed oil pipeline. Servus Credit Union economist says, "It was kind of, in some ways, the missing piece in everything we've heard over the past few weeks." Alberta and Canada are offering the country's five largest oil sands producers lower carbon costs, faster permits and financial incentives, but the backgrounder offers no details on what kind of support -- or the financial value -- the province is offering industry in exchange for more production. The governments promise more oil, royalties and jobs, but it hinges on a pipeline that lacks final approvals and committed customers.
