The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the U.S. and Iran maintained opposing views on Tehran's uranium stockpile and the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, despite U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noting "some good signs" in talks. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Rubio said that a diplomatic solution would be unlikely if Tehran enacted a tolling system in the strait. An Iranian source said that while no deal has been reached, gaps have narrowed, with uranium enrichment and control over the strait still key sticking points. Mr. Trump also railed against Tehran's intentions to charge fees for use of the strait, where a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas transited before the war. Mr. Trump said: "We want it open, we want it free. We don't want tolls. It's an international waterway." He has said he is set to resume strikes on Iran if he does not get the "right answers" from Iran's leadership. Iran's Revolutionary Guards have warned that renewed attacks would trigger retaliation beyond its region. Mr. Trump is under domestic pressure ahead of the November midterm elections, with his approval rating near its lowest since returning to the White House, largely due to rising fuel prices.
