The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, May 13, edition that the credit agency, Transunion, hired by Mackenzie Investments to guard customers's identities after a supply chain hack exposed their personal information is buckling under the demand. The Post's David Reevely writes that Transunion is dealing with 1.5 million Mackenzie investors who have received alert letters. IGM Financial's Mackenzie is one of many affected by a cyberattack in January on a file transfer service called Goanywhere offered by Minneapolis-based Fortra. Mackenzie does not use Goanywhere directly. The vendor, Toronto's Investorcom, which acts as an intermediary for Mackenzie's contacts with investment customers, uses it. Mackenzie said in a statement: "Call volumes have been particularly high and we sincerely apologize to those who are experiencing long wait times when trying to register for credit monitoring services. We're advising impacted investors who have received a letter and have an activation code to enroll on-line at www.mytrueidentity.ca. Impacted investors have until Aug. 31, 2023 to enroll." One affected customer says she was infuriated by Mackenzie's "canned answers."
