The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, April 10, edition that the United States Department of Commerce plans to reduce duty rates for most Canadian softwood producers, but they will still face significant levies of 34.83 per cent on shipments to the U.S. The Globe's Brent Jang writes that currently, U.S. import taxes on softwood lumber total 45.16 per cent, including countervailing and anti-dumping duties of 35.16 per cent and tariffs of 10 per cent. The Commerce Department announced it expects to decrease the anti-dumping duty rates from 20.53 per cent to 10.66 per cent. Most Canadian producers also face paying 14.17 per cent for countervailing duties, down slightly from 14.63 per cent, based on the preliminary determination. The revised anti-dumping and countervailing duties equal 24.83 per cent, and when combined with the tariffs, the levies total 34.83 per cent. The U.S. slaps countervailing duties on what it sees as government-subsidized Canadian lumber and charges anti-dumping duties because it claims Canadian producers sell softwood below market value. New duty rates are intended to take effect by late summer of 2026, subject to further revisions in a final determination.
