The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, April 30, edition that the Liberal Party of Canada has secured its fourth consecutive mandate, bringing new faces to the government when the House of Commons resumes. The Globe's Jameson Berkow writes that many incoming members have strong business backgrounds, with Tim Hodgson from a suburban Toronto riding being a notable example, he has a history in high finance and advised former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney. The list of neophyte Grit MPs also includes a former Quebec finance minister, a veteran diplomat, a former president of IBM Canada and an internationally trained lawyer with an Oxford MBA. Mr. Carney will face pressure to further renew the ministerial ranks, since his party has been in power for the past decade. As a newbie MP himself, the Prime Minister is expected to draw on the political expertise of veteran MPs with previous cabinet experience such as Francois-Philippe Champagne, Chrystia Freeland, Melanie Joly, Anita Anand, Dominic LeBlanc and Bill Blair. Decisions will have to be made quickly, as Mr. Carney is widely expected to name his new cabinet within two weeks, with plans to introduce a new budget before Canada Day.
