The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that many organizations are realizing the importance of embracing artificial intelligence to stay relevant in the future. The Post's guest columnist Rosalind Stefanac writes that in addition to hiring people with expertise in AI, companies are also recognizing the need to retrain their existing employees. Steve Astorino, who is the general manager of product development, data, AI and sustainability, and Canada lab director at IBM, stated that advancements in generative AI over the past 24 months have disrupted the workforce and highlighted the need to address skill gaps. Mr. Astorino says: "It doesn't matter what level or what type of job it is, AI is impacting us across the board. ... We have to acknowledge that the world has changed and we need to embrace that." In April, a consortium of nine global corporations (including IBM, Intel, Cisco, SAP and others) joined forces to determine just how to advance an AI-enabled information and communications technology workforce for the future. IBM has set a goal to train 30 million individuals in digital skills by 2030, of which two million will be focused on AI. Intel has similar AI training plans in the same time frame.
