The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Sept. 30, edition that China's crackdown on cryptocurrency mining and trading is something that could be advantageous for Canadian cryptocurrency miners. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that Iterative Law cryptocurrency lawyer Jonathan Ip says Canadian crypto miners are filling the vacuum left by Chinese miners going offline. Hut 8 Mining chief financial officer Shane Downey says since the summer there has been a big drop in China in the computational power used for mining digital currency. Mr. Downey notes that the amount of power used to mine bitcoin increased in jurisdictions such as Kazakhstan, the United States and Canada. Last Friday, Chinese regulators imposed a blanket ban on all crypto transactions and mining. Canadian crypto miner Hive Blockchain Technologies announced on Sept. 1 that it had taken delivery of a large amount of equipment from a Chinese cryptocurrency company. Mr. Ip says Canada's tax regime and climate could gradually make it a preferred destination for miners. He notes: "Our import taxes are lower than the United States. ... [Canada's] cold climate is better for the servers. They last longer."
