The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Feb. 6, edition that back in the spring of 2010, Kevin Warsh, when he was still a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, sang the praises of Federal Reserve independence. The Globe's Rita Trichur writes that Mr. Warsh is now U.S. President Donald Trump's nominee to become the central bank's next chair. There are mixed predictions about whether Mr. Warsh will actually shake up the storied institution as much as he has intimated in past comments. After all, there is a world of difference between offering analysis and doing the job itself. Mr. Warsh believes the Fed should return to its original monetary policy approach, as it has diverged from its mandate. He connects the Fed's independence with its institutional credibility. The Globe says Mr. Warsh is a paradox. He is known for being an "inflation hawk" but also appears to share Mr. Trump's desire to lower short-term interest rates -- even though inflation is still above the Fed's 2 per cent target. But considering that he has criticized Mr. Powell for consistently missing the mark on interest rates, the Fed's independence rests on Mr. Warsh not ignoring the data.
