The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Anthropic announced that the U.S. Commerce Department lifted export controls on its Fable and Mythos artificial intelligence models, just weeks after being ordered to suspend access to its advanced AI due to national security concerns. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Washington has increased oversight of new AI model releases to identify potential threats, amid concerns about misuse by military intelligence in countries like China and Russia. Anthropic disabled its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models after an export-control order on June 12. Recently, the U.S. government allowed the release of Mythos 5 to select "trusted" U.S. organizations, partially reversing the order. "We'll begin restoring access tomorrow," Anthropic said in a statement on X. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in a letter to Anthropic, said the export controls were withdrawn and that a licence was no longer required for the export of the Mythos or Fable models. "Anthropic has agreed to pro-actively detect and address security risks associated with the models, Mr. Lutnick said. The government's process for deciding which companies can use these models has received criticism.
