Globe says Alphabet's bond sale sets a record

2026-05-11 07:56 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, May 11, edition that the full-scale invasion of Canada, by foreign corporations flooding into our debt market, is well under way. The Globe's Jameson Berkow writes that last week, Alphabet, Google's parent company, raised $8.5-billion by selling a four-part bond with maturities from five to 30 years. This bond set records as the largest maple bond and the largest corporate bond in Canada's history, exceeding the previous record of $7.15-billion by Coastal GasLink in 2024 by over $1-billion. The Alphabet deal adds to several recent multibillion-dollar maples, including Goldman Sachs's $2.75-billion in February and AT&T's $2.25-billion in March. The maple market was set for a record-breaking year in 2026, a milestone already reached by early May after the Alphabet transaction. Foreign issuers are drawn to Canada's lower interest rates and favorable currency exchange rates, but a key factor is increased investor demand due to a change in early 2025. That was when newly issued maples started getting included in the FTSE Canada Universe Bond Index. The change gave maple issuers access to a much larger pool of investors, including the droves that own index-tracking funds.
