The National Post reports in its Wednesday edition that a new survey commissioned by industry advocacy group News Media Canada found that more than seven in 10 Canadians think the federal government should move to prevent artificial intelligence companies from taking and repackaging news content without permission or compensation. The Post's Chris Knight writes that the on-line survey conducted by Totum Research found that 44 per cent of 2,400 Canadian adults strongly agreed that the government should intervene, while another 27 per cent said they somewhat agreed. Only 6 per cent somewhat or strongly disagreed with government intervention. Paul Deegan at News Media Canada told the Post he was "pleasantly surprised" with the public's support, saying Canadians are concerned "just in terms of seeing all of the misinformation and disinformation out there. I think they're concerned in terms of the viability of news. Mr. Deegan urged the Department of Industry to direct the Competition Bureau to conduct a market study into the state of competition with respect to search and artificial intelligence. Second, the feds should clearly indicate that the Copyright Act will not be amended to include a text and data mining exception.
